The Outdoors Are The Best Part Of An Alaskan Vacation
You would be hard pressed to find a state in America that can rival the natural beauty of Alaska, and especially its wildlife. From magnificent snow capped mountains to serene lakes full of salmon, Alaska offers an outdoor vacation that’s hard to beat.
Your best options when flying into Alaska would be to touch down at Fairbanks in the north, or at Anchorage in the south. You can actually find yourself visiting both cities, flying into one of the airports, then flying out of the opposite one. Since you will be riding in or driving a car to the return airport, this would give you a fairly reasonable guide as to where to go and how to get there.
If you want to see more sights along the way, you could take a train ride from one of these two cities to the other. This journey of just under 350 miles will give you not only breathtaking views of Mt. McKinley, crosses the 700ft Mears Memorial bridge and clings to the side of Nenana River Canyon, but it also takes you across Hurricane Gulch that is 918ft wide. This may be the best train ride you’ll ever get on in America.
Sports and leisure opportunities abound in Alaska, whether you prefer to go backpacking in Denali National Park or dog mushing near Fairbanks, you’ll find something new to experience. Word of advice for those who plan to stay overnight at Denali – this park has strict rules in place now that would require one to fill out a reservation form in order to stay overnight. This is perfect for the vacationer who likes recreation, but prefers it quiet – activities in most parts of Alaska include gold panning, canoing, fishing, or simply taking pictures of its exquisite wildlife. Regular golfers missing their regular dose of eighteen holes can play a round at the park if they wish. On the other side of the scale, extreme sports such as rock climbing, heli-skiing, and rafting are also available for those who enjoy the thrill and adventure involved.
No longer should you think of Alaska as the state of polar bears sleeping in caves frosted with snow and ice. You can enjoy all the above activities and see all the above attractions, and want to come back for another time.
